The beginning

I'm not certain what I want to do with this blog. I am constantly amazed by the creativity of others, so I guess this will be my try.

How did I get into whippets? As a child, I had always dreamed of growing up, owning a house with a fireplace that would contain two Old English Sheepdogs.....someplace along the way, I got realistic about hair.

The road to my final profession and to my two dogs by a fireplace has been a long one. As an undergrad at Texas A&M, I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. After realizing it WAS NOT chemical engineering, I gravitated toward biochemistry and then graduate school. In grad school, I couldn't afford a place where I could have a dog. So, I got Peyton: I was told that if I got her as a kitten, I could train her to be a dog. NOT true. She was 100% cat, but she and I went through a lot together.

Twelve years, later, I decided that I had delayed gratification long enough and decided it was time for my first dog. While in graduate school, I had met a man that jogged with his whippet. I knew nothing about the breed, but doing internet research, I though it was THE breed for me. Dogs that needed exercise but were somewhat cat-like in their sleep requirements. A dog that with training could become a jogging partner. It all seemed that it would be right for me.

I began the search, and eventually found Darby (he's boy -- it was in the boy name book). I was smitten him from the beginning, and was not certain that I would ever find another dog that could be so perfect. Unfortunately, even though Darby came into my life as a puppy, Peyton (the cat) never quite warmed to him. Still, we had a happy, if not separate household.
