Fun Monday #5

Mariposa has asked us to share a) the origin of our blog name and b) our favorite/most common dish. I am assuming that she knows that the most common dish in the house is NOT the most favorite dish.

The origin of Ragracers......About 9 years ago (has it been THAT long?), I obtained my first whippet. I have always loved dogs. Because of my educational path, I had not gotten a dog (being a responsible person) even though I had always said that I would grow up and have two English Sheepdogs to lay by the fireplace. When I decided that I had delayed gratification and that it was time to get a dog, I chose the whippet rather than the English Sheepdog realizing that the athletic dog would better fit my lifestyle.

Although my first two whippets were obtained with only the goal of having a pet that would jog with me, I became hooked on racing them after about a year of whippet ownership. If one researches whippet racing, one will find that back in the early 19th century, it was called rag racing. Rather than chase a lure as we do today, the dogs were enticed down the field by having a person at the other end wave a rag. Since I live with a bunch of rag racers, that is my blog name. Now, the sympathy play (grin). The most common dish in my house:
Anyone want to take me home? Feed me real food? Yup. That's it. Pretty convenient. Somewhere in my life, I think at age 10, I decided that peanut butter is a core food group. That has persisted into my adult life. The peanut butter on bagel kick is VERY convenient -- once prepared, I can eat it on the road (there really aren't a lot of sit down meals in my house). Since moving to Smalltown TX I have had to made some adjustments. There are no bagel shops here (insert horror scream; we did just get a Starbucks, although I have never needed that sort of caffeine boost in my life). I have found that these whole wheat bagels are the least card-board like of any bagel that I can buy....but the advantages of living in Smalltown TX far outweigh the insult to my gustatory sensibilities (BTW, I am one of those vegetarians living smack dab in the middle of ranch country. I don't publicize that a whole lot. When my eating preferences do come out, I get some interesting responses: "You do eat chicken, right?" Oh, yeah....chicken, that OTHER vegetable group!).

Anyway, for those of you who might want a fun recipe:

TOFU CHILI

1 lg. onion, chopped
1 cup diced celery
1 lg. Clove garlic, minced
1 can (28 oz.) tomatoes
1 can (8 oz.) tomato sauce
1 Tbsp. chili powder
1 tsp. cumin
½ tsp. oregano
½ tsp. thyme
salt & pepper to taste
1 tofu (20 oz.) cubed
2 cans (16 oz). red kidney beans, drained
Spray a 4 quart sauce pan with nonstick cooking spray. Saute onion, celery and garlic until tender. Stir in all other ingredients, cover & simmer for an hour.

This is a fun recipe, but rarely made.....

Thanks for stopping by. Go enjoy the others having fun this week.

My kids survived on peanut butter and honey or peanut butte and jelly all through their school years. Now I've read articles on how you are helping the world by eating peanut butter. :)
Love the history of the name of your blog. Very cool along with the old black and white photo!

We go through dozens of bagels at our house every week. Yes, dozens! And Peanut Butter. Oh, I agree. It is it's own food group!

I had never heard of Rag Racers, interesting.

Whippets were a much better choice (Old English Sheep Dogs are good dogs too, but they eat more and shed more).

I can't remember a day that I haven't had some peanut butter. Boy I'm glad I'm not allergic.

Ragracers ! You learn something new every day.
Had never heard of that until I visited here.
Peanut Butter ! I love it with bananas!
Yes, you can come to my house and eat chips and dip out of my favorite dish.

Celeste, thanks so much for posting the participants here...such a brilliant thing!

Now I got it...nice to know how the name of your blog came to be...and your food...that is my LIFE had I not been living with my parents! LOL

Alison said...

Thanks for giving us a history lesson..I never knew that and I love learning history!! I must confess to not liking peanut butter though...I wish I did like it, but I don't!!

Hey, I love peanut butter too. As a kid, after school we'd come home and make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I still have them. But I do like the meat. Cool blog name and reason for it.

Kaytabug said...

Ha ha ha you labeled your comments bark backs!
I kinda figured it had to do with the dogs...still learning bits of info I never knew!

Yummy PB...have you ever tried sunbutter? It's yummy too!!

I still eat peanut butter several days a week. Usually on crackers (and only crunchy!) I also miss my bagel shop back in Cleveland, it was a local shop and had the best everything and salt bagels. We have Panera here, now, but it's not the same.

Didn't know whippets had another name!

Nice story about your blog title ! For me it was easy it just popped out because I love writer's cramps, lol !

-Ann said...

I've always wondered about your name, too. I figured it had something to do with dogs, but I couldn't understand the rag part. Thanks for educating me!

Sounds like you have a great life in ranch country Celeste. How many "ragracers" own you?

Agree about the core food eating style-cuts down on decisionmaking.

Pamela said...

you mean peanut butter isn't a core food group? oh dear!

Would love to have sandwiches with you (blackberry jelly please) and play with your dogs.

ps. somehow my link up there is not correct. I don't know how to fix it

So now we know! Do you ever add marshmellows to your peanut butter bagel? MMMM they make everything better! Jen

my4kids said...

I never knew that about the whippet racing.
My kids think peanut butter is a staple also but personally I'm not a big fan. My mother thinks I'm nuts.

Yeaaa a list of participants! I didn't see one on the host's blog?? Really interesting how you picked your blog name, whippets really fascinate me. We saw one at the puppy park one time at a full on run and it was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!

That's what I have for breakfast almost every morning. That and an apple or some orange slices. It's nutritious, low glycemic and fast!

I didn't know that about rag-racing. We acquired a dog this past summer and she's something of a mystery heritage-wise. We have finally decided that she is a german shepard/whippet. Too small to be a greyhound, but has lots of those characteristics. My husband's ex girlfriend had whippets, so he was very familiar with them. It has helped enormously in dealing with this dog - she gets LOTS of exercise!

So cool! This is my first time to your blog and the first person I know that races dogs! I am hooked!

Oh, and I love peanut butter too. Mostly on apples ;0)

Love the story behind you blog title!!! Love the dog breed myself. Altho at my age, cats are easier to care for. LOL

My Fun Monday is up if you haven't dropped by...I hope you can visit!!!

I have never ever been able to stomach peanut butter...mind you, I've only gotten a taste for peanuts over the last year or so, so perhaps a taste for it will come!

Sauntering Soul said...

I've never heard the term rag racers either. I love learning new things. And I also love peanut butter. A lot. It's kind of a requirement being from Georgia and Jimmy Carter country though.

Never had peanut butter on a bagel - am I missing out?

Nothing wrong with good old Peanut Butter! It's a staple at our house as well! I loved the story of your blog's name!

Jan said...

Peanut butter is still a staple at our house. My husband loves it.

That was so interesting to read about the rag racing and see the photo.

I'm not a huge fan of peanut butter but I do like almond butter :)

I love the name of your blog ~ I never new that about Whippet racing, very interesting.

Can I just say I heard "Whip It" today on the radio and now it might stay with me for days after reading this??? ha!

Interesting chain of events, though; and you're definitely one of a kind (your blog title). In a "world" where there's a lot of duplication, that says a lot.

Me? Tofu Chili?? Only when I come over for a visit, k? ;)

Sandy said...

Peanut butter samwich is the only option when someone doesn't like what I have cooked. Some weeks we go through a lot of peanut butter!

I knew your name had something to do with the pups, now I know for sure what it is.

Kim said...

I love your pups! So cute. We have three precious boxers. They are the best companions!

Unknown said...

I figured it had to do with the whippets but I didn't know that story. How neat!

I would bring you home and feed you but I don't often cook and many times eat peanut butter crackers. :)

My one and only experiment with tofu ended up being a disaster. Never tried it again.

Loved learning about Whippets. Several jobs ago, the secretary had adopted one that had been abused and would bring him in to the office with her. He'd stay right by her side the whole day.

Loved the history of your blog name!!

And now we know ... great story. Peanut Butter is a must have in my kitchen (although there aren't any kids at home anymore) - I treat myself with a PB & J sandwich every now and then.

How fascinating to learn how your blog got its name. That's a very cool story.

I think Peanut Butter is one of the most perfect foods ever. I could live on it. Truly.

I make a really good peanut noodle dish that only takes about five minutes and is wonderful. Because I totally get the vegetarian thing!

ragracers is truly unique and interesting though i'm no dog or pet lover at that. til next fun monday! :D

Jenni said...

Your vegetarian comments reminded me of My Big Fat Greek Wedding:
"It's okay, I make a lamb!" I guess lamb is also a vegetable group:o)

What's wrong with peanut butter and bagels? Sounds yummy to me!

Interesting story about the name of your blog. I have wondered where the name came from.

Ari_1965 said...

I don't like the way tofu looks, all white and from-outer-space, floating in soups, stews and chili. It's so flabby looking.

Have you tried cashew or almond butter? I love all the nut butters.

Karina said...

I'm new to the world of peanut butter, having been allergic to it for most of my life (and suddenly, the allergy was gone), but yes, peanut butter on bagels...yum...

Even better, have you tried peanut butter on waffles? DELICIOUS! ;-)

Your Tuesday post showed up in my Bloglines, but I can't get the page to come up on Blogger... Maybe you are working on it?

I bet those races are awesome! It's a great blog name too, especially given your pictures.

Yes, peanut butter and bagels are great! My all time favorite breakfast and snack is toast with peanut butter!

Thanks for sharing!
